the 2002 slim's fiasco

  • Oct. 30th, 2007 at 10:39 PM
Me and Indigo Girls, Indigo Girls and Me
i was watching the 10pm news tonight (to get information about the earthquake). after the earthquake coverage, the next big story was the scalping of bay area hannah montana (who is she? really? i mean i have heard of her, but she seemed to come out of nowhere. and i didn't realize that she was so popular...) tickets. the reporter was warning people to be aware of fraudulent tickets. the reporter was also interviewing people who believe that scalpers are making way too much off these tickets (umm, $300 a pop?!?).

that reminded me of this fiasco.

in 2002, the indigo girls played slim's in san francisco as part of their small (venue) become you preview tour. for those who don't know, slim's is a small club in the south of market area of san francisco. technically speaking, the girls are "too big" to play somewhere that small. but one of the sweetest parts of the become you preview tour *was* the small venues (the nashville show, which i was lucky enough to attend, was at this tiny teeeeeny space and tickets sold out within 30 seconds.) i was actually in graduate school in another state at the time, but of course i flew out to san francisco for the show (and a few more that week), since slim's is so small and all of these venues were so intimate (i brought up the nashville show because that was by far the smallest venue of the tour). anyway, the slim's show sold out within three minutes. luckily, i was ON it (as always) and did indeed get tickets. everyone thought that amy and emily were going to add a second show, but that didn't happen (they were already scheduled to play the catalyst, in santa cruz, the next night. that show was, to this date, one of the best IG shows i have seen).

now, given the fact that the girls can easily sell out multiple nights at the fillmore, warfield (much bigger venues), and even the mountain winery which isn't in san francisco proper, it is obvious that the bay area fan base is strong. the slim's tickets were the hottest ticket in town. seriously. i know it's hard to believe because now, the girls are hardly a bleep on anyone's radar, but it's true. scalpers were making BANK on the slim's tickets. there was a lot of ticket forgery. slim's had to change their doors procedure for the night of the show to ensure that only ticket holders with valid tickets got in the doors. sadly, a lot of people bought faux tickets from scalpers, and there was a lot of disappointment. all of the major media sources, including the san francisco chronicle carried the story. in fact, it was one of the headlines in the chronicle a few days before the show.

the hannah montana "news" story reminded me of all of this. i can't believe that my girls, whose career has obviously taken a fall since then, had the hottest ticket in town and one of the biggest news stories in town. and san francisco! this isn't even their hometown. i (of course) also attended the atlanta show on the same tour. something similar happened there (basically, they had to change the venue because they sold way too many tickets for the original venue due to a glitch in the ticketing system. the show was moved to the variety playhouse, and that was the largest venue of that tour), but again, it still wasn't as newsworthy. and sadly, i don't think there'd be such a crazy demand for slim's tickets if they were to play there again. hell amy didn't even sell it out (one night) on her 2005 solo tour. times, they have changed.
Emily quack face
yesterday, emily saliers participated in a v-day event in atlanta. before the performance, emily and doria roberts appeared on atlanta and company, a local program. the video is on their website for a limited time (i can't provide a direct link, but just go to that site and click on "v-day atlanta" on the left hand side of the page. that will take you to the video.). i tried to record the video stream so i could upload it for y'all, but it didn't work. in the interest of archiving the interview, i did record the audio. it's an m4a (itunes) file. sorry, non itunes users. here's the link to download it:

emily saliers and doria roberts on atlanta and company - 26 sept 2007

i will re-attempt to record the video, but i sort of have a crazy day with the drama of prince of darkness being sick. i'll see what i can do, though.

Indigo Girls in Fairbanks Alaska
i was going to go to tonight's beastie boys show at the berkeley greek just to hang out with some friends, but instead i stayed in and watched big love on dvd. entertaining. very entertaining. anyway, in the midst of all this, i realize i did not post the setlists from the indigo girls shows i attended on the east coast last week. nearly a week late, but here they are.

freeport, me )

brownfield, me #1 )

brownfield, me #2 )

and that wraps up indigo girls summer tour. i have a few more shows on the horizon, but none of them are officially during the "summer." that also means that my summer tour set on flickr is complete. i didn't do so bad this time either. i was able to get at least one photo at every show (including humphreys) with the exception of the two stone mountain shows. fair enough. i can understand the no cameras policy for that venue. i am so glad that i got some great shots - they're going to serve as great memories for years to come. this summer was amazing. i started on the west coast, went to atlanta, went to alaska (which was lifechanging in so many ways), and ended up on the east coast. i added two states to my "states i have seen the indigo girls" map: maine and alaska. i saw so many of my friends along the way, and had an all around great summer tour. although i will see IG before next summer, there's nothing quite like a summer tour. so i am already ready to start planning summer of 2008! ok, after i get caught up on my sleep. i am old now. i need more sleep.

Correspondence: 2007-08-06: Notes From Amy - June 07 Tour

Well now that we're heading into August, I am thinking back on the June tour and how much fun it was. Brandi Carlile and her band - the Twins and Josh - toured around the West with us.

It really helped to have the infusion of fresh energy. We played "Last Tears" and Brandi's song "Cannonball." We also pulled out some obscure tunes to learn, including "Hope Alone," "World Falls," and acoustic versions of "Tried to Be True" and "Rock And Roll Heaven's Gate" plus my favorite - a cover of "Don't Think Twice It's Alright." There's more to come in August.

We ended July by filming a show in Atlanta at one of our old faves - The Roxy. Three5Human and Brandi joined us for a marathon set of 29 songs. The show is going to be broadcast on HDnet and we're going to make a DVD to be released sometime next year.

While on tour, we spent a lot of time practicing these songs in various dressing rooms, but still took some time out to go to the Bowling Alley.

I lost a bet to Brian, our soundman. We have developed a betting relationship and I am in the hole right now by about 10 bucks. I documented everyone's scores for posterity. As you can see, Emily, the Twins (Phil and Tim), and Josh pretty much cornered the game. I lost my bet to Brian - beat me double or nothing on this last score. Sullie won the big prize though for bowling left handed since her right thumb was broken.

After we bowled a few games, we had fun in the arcade. Here are Tim, Carla, and Dave trying their skills on the dance machine. I want one of these for my house...

I put a little movie together of our dressing room rehearsals. If you ask me, these are some of the highlights of touring with friends. If you watch this, you'll see why. Thanks to Russell and Carla for helping me do the filming.

and that concludes the alaska tour...

woah.... six shows in eight days in two very opposite sides of the country. i am officially worn out. but my atlanta to home (for one day) to alaska deal was so worth it. i got to see the best show ever (the roxy) and got to experience alaska for the first time with two of my favorite people (and their crew!). in terms of alaska shows, anchorage #2 was hands down my favorite. tonight was really good, but it had sort of a weird vibe that i can't quite put my finger on. the girls seemed a bit tired and disconnected. and i kind of felt the same way. it's not that it wasn't a great show - no matter what, amy and emily always put on killer shows. it was just the crowd, the vibe, my complete lack of sleep, etc.

photos coming soon. not sure how any of them turned out as i had to be *fast* because of the retarded no camera policy (hello! ask the BAND what their policy is and follow THAT!)

tomorrow i'm going to "see shit" in fairbanks before heading home. i am so thankful that i got the opprutunity to come to alaska for the first time ever. and i am so thrilled that (as lame as this sounds) i got to center it around indigo girls shows. i just checked off a BIG state from my list, and i got to see some amazing sights up here.

i am so excited for this weekend.

tomorrow night i'm driving down to san jose (really, not a long ride at all. only about an hour. less at night) to see brandi carlile with her full band for free! yes! brandi! for free! anyway, i am so excited to see her rock out again with a full band. it should be a good show. i'm going to try to leave work a bit early just so i don't miss any of it.

then on friday night my weekend o fun really begins. i'm leaving on that midnight PLANE (yes, plane, NOT train) to georgia! atlanta!!! three indigo girls shows!!! with the best openers ever: girlyman, brandi carlile, and three5human!!! some of my bestest friends ever!!! breakfast at the flying biscuit!!! it should be a fabulous weekend in one of my all time favorite cities. i just need to get (re)adjusted to the humidity, but whatever. it's not like i've never experienced humidity before.

and that's what's up...

that was fast!

not surprising, though.

the indigo girls added show at the roxy (in atlanta) is sold out. it sold out within five minutes of going on sale.

this is awesome for them, though not at all surprising. both shows at the atlanta botanic gardens have been sold out for months (and sold out really quickly). in fact, the scalpers (damn them) are charging (or shall i say 'attempting to charge'?) a pretty penny for those tickets.

i am glad that amy and emily are selling out hometown shows again. and quickly.

edit: oh, and the scalpers are happy too. :/ a simple search for "indigo girls" on ebay brings up at least 10 results for tickets to the roxy. they're selling (or again, ATTEMPTING) them for well over 100% above cost.

insane.

this is late... but it's still NOT TOO LATE!

Amnesty International
urgent action alert from amy and emily:

July 11, 2007

Dear friends,

We need your help!

Troy Davis is at risk of being executed on July 17 in Georgia despite strong evidence suggesting he is innocent!

Davis, an African American, was sent to death row fifteen years ago for the shooting of a white police officer in Savannah, Georgia. The conviction was based on no physical evidence. The murder weapon was never found.

Some years after the initial trial, when the tense environment in Savannah calmed, seven of the prosecution's non-police witnesses recanted or contradicted their testimony. One witness who has not recanted has been implicated as the actual murderer by nine people! The other remaining witness said he could only recall the color of the shooter's clothes. Most of the witnesses who have recanted alleged that the police coerced them to implicate Davis, despite not having witnessed the crime.

Mr. Davis has no more appeals. The appeal courts did not hear the new evidence because of a series of technicalities. The last stop for Troy Davis is the State Board of Pardons and Paroles, which can grant clemency and prevent the execution. They meet Monday (July 16) in the morning in a closed meeting to consider clemency.

Please go to www.amnestyusa.org/troydavis to send a message to the Parole Board before their Monday meeting. More information about the case is also on that page.

You could also join activists at Little 5 Points (Moreland/Euclid) for a demonstration Thursday, July 12, 5:00pm - 6:30pm.

Thank you for your support - it is critical!

Indigo Girls with Harold the Flea
i am having a good day. let's recap:

* thanks to [info]cornfusion and [info]pipedreamer21 and TAG TEAM TICKET BUYING, i got front row for the palm desert indigo girls show. that means that yes, i am doing all of the california shows (come on y'all, ACT surprised!)!

* i bought my plane ticket to atlanta. (and a plane ticket to NY state for a wedding, but that's different). therefore all of my summer airline ticket buying is DONE!

* i added up my united miles and after august i will FINALLY have my premier status back, which makes me super happy. i didn't make premier this year (you do the traveling the previous year) because i got sick and couldn't travel as much. i like being premier. i don't like being just a "general" frequent flyer.

so yeah, front row IG tickets, 2008 premier status with united in the bag, and air travel all purchased. yay!
Amy and Girlyman
it is true! girlyman is opening for the indigo girls on some of their july and august shows. sadly, i'll only be at one of these, but one is better than none (and none of these shows are on the west coast. i was pleased with brandi carlile as an opener, but now that the east coast gets girlyman, not so much anymore!). i am sooo excited for summer tour now!

girlyman will open:

28 july - atlanta
22 august - oyster bay, ny
24 august - hyannis, ma
25 august - cohasset, ma

i'm doing some OTHER east coast shows, but not cohasset, hyannis, and oyster bay. BUT i am doing both atlanta shows and so far gman is opening one of them. maybe it will be IG + gman + three5human in atlanta. omgz, if that happens i think i may die and go to heaven!

"world falls" - amy ray (indigo girls)

i'm coming home with a stone, strapped onto my back
i'm coming home with a burning hope turning all my blues to black
i'm looking for a sacred hand to carve into my stone
a ghost of comfort, angel's breath to keep this life inside my chest

this world falls on me with hopes of immortality
everywhere i turn all the beauty just keeps shaking me

i woke up in the middle of a dream scared the world was too much for me
sejarez said, "don't let go, just plant the seeds and watch them grow"
i've slept in rainy canyon lands, cold drenched to my skin
i always wake to find a face to calm these troubled lands

this world falls on me with dreams of immortality
everywhere i turn all the beauty just keeps shaking me

now i'm running to the end of the earth
and i'm swimming to the edge of the sea
and i'm laughing i'm under a starry sky
this world was meant for me
don't bury me, carry me

i wish i was a nomad, an indian, or a saint
the edge of death would disappear, leave me nothing left to taint
i wish i was a nomad, an indian, or a saint
give me walking shoes, feathered arms, and a key to heaven's gate

this world falls on me with dreams of immortality
everywhere i turn all the beauty just keeps shaking me
