the camera police was out in full force last night!
so my berkeley photos kind of suck. sorry!
i uploaded a few.
it was a MUCH bettter show! here is the setlist:
love of our lives
sugar tongue
fill it up again
yield
power of two
(michelle malone, who was playing across the bay in san francisco, played "tighten up the springs")
ghost of the gang
what are you like
ozilline
everything in its own time
driver education
digging for your dream
get out the map (yes, two emily songs in a row)
shame on you (amy fuck*ed up the first verse for the third time in a row)
prince of darkness
second time around
fleet of hope
FUGITIVE (!!!!)
watershed
romeo & juliet
i'll change
kid fears (surprisingly, NOT with matt morris. i LOVE when the audience sings the echo and that happened last night!)
closer to fine (w/ matt morris)
(encore)
heartache for everyone (w/ matt morris)
galileo
i seriously didn't write down the sacramento setlist, i was so disappointed after that show. but i am sure joey and i can remember it (with some help). i'll try to get it posted.
i am a MUCH happier indigo girls fan today. berkeley was AWESOME!

on tuesday night i attended a special indigo girls private show in the KFOG playspace (here in san francisco). joey went with me, and it was kind of a random mid-february treat for us. anyone who has ever been to the the KFOG playspace knows that it is very small - i believe the capacity is about 30. the girls did a quick swing through the west coast (san francisco, seattle, and portland) to promote poseidon and the bitter bug, due out on 24 march. (side note: i have heard the entire album and i am far from impressed, but after hearing a few of the songs live, i got a tiny glimmer of hope).
this is not the first indigo girls private show i had attended, so i kind of knew what to expect: very low key, short set, and very few instruments (amy: one guitar, a mandolin, and a harmonica; emily: two guitars).
KFOG did not allow any photos, recordings, or cell phones because any additional electronics could interfere with their recording. i respected that, and turned everything off. bummer about the no-photos because joey and i were in the front row, and my photos would have been sweet.

again, short and sweet. during amy's "tuning time" the audience (mostly not seasoned IG fans, just lucky radio winners) asked a few questions. nothing new, nothing that most IG fans don't already know.
it was a fun night, and although i'm not going to do much traveling to see the girls for this album, it did excite me for their return to the bay area to play a real show (hopefully in may or the summer).

so so so so sad this is over. i had such a blast and met some amazing people. and the crowes played about 90% of my wish-list over the course of five nights.
here's tonight's setlist. today was chris' birthday and this was a really amazing gig.
i hope the black crowes do another five at the fillmore soon!
Feelin' Alright
Stare It Cold
High Head Blues -> Jam
Space Captain
Seeing Things
Young Man, Old Man
Let Me Share The Ride
Descending
Downtown Money Waster -> Jam ->
Mona ->
Take Off From The Future ->
Thorn In My Pride
Polly
Oh Josephine
Feathers
Movin' On Down The Line

phil lesh (grateful dead) joined the crowes on stage for their encore. my highlights: "descending," "feathers," "sugaree," "feelin' alright," "seeing things," and "let me share the ride." this show was also 170 minutes verses their usual 120. what an awesome show. pics from the five nights coming very soon!

ok these just keep getting better and better.
*sigh* i can't believe tomorrow night is the final show in a five night run of black crowes shows. i will miss the fillmore. i will miss some people we met. i will miss going to see the crowes on the regular. and i will miss chris, rich, steve, sven, luther, mona, portia charity, and yes, even adam.
here is tonight's setlist:
Cursed Diamond
Horsehead
Goodbye Daughters Of The Revolution
Hotel Illness
Comin' Home
Under A Mountain
Jam -> Bring On, Bring On
Girl From A Pawnshop
Girl From The North Country
Good Friday
Title Song
Bewildered
Soul Singing
Hard To Handle -> Jam
Wounded Bird
- encore -
God's Got It
Can't You Hear Me Knocking
"soul singing" sounded amazing! and this is the first time they have played "bewildered" since something like 1993. other highlights for me were "good friday," "title song," "under a mountain," "girl from a pawnshop," "horsehead," and even "god's got it" (i am not crazy about that song, but it is fucking awesome with steve playing the band leader's drum live...). joey was really happy to get "bring on bring on." i love that the crowes actually mix up their setlists and play several genuine surprises a night. other bands could learn a lesson from the crowes... ;)

"wyoming and me" was my number one "have to hear it (but might not because it is kind of a stretch)" song on this tour. oh fuck yeah. and "my morning song," "evil eye," and "another roadside tragedy" were badass killer as well. the die hards were going crazy over "exit" as the crowes had not played that live in over ten years.
this one's going to be hard to top...
edit: since i know not everyone who reads my blog is a black crowes fan, here's an mp3 of "wyoming and me". :)

all in all a fantastic setlist!
(hopefully they got "she talks to angels" out of their system for good. arrrgh! so not my fave. actually, my least fave (my "black crowes 'power of two'" if you will...). but with four more nights who knows what's in store!)

i was uber excited about the indigo girls at the oakland art and soul festival. for starters, the stage was, oh, six/seven blocks from my house. i have to say, it was pretty nifty seeing a band that i have followed all over the world in the middle of a street that i regularly walk/bike/drive down in downtown oakland. also, while this was a festival and obviously a fly in/fly out show (less gear), i actually thought it was better than the bulk of shows i saw this summer. the girls were ON FIRE. julie wolf (a hometown girl!) was with them for the first half of their set, but had to leave for another show halfway through. matt nathanson (who i had never really heard of but am now a fan) played a few songs with them too. they honored del martin. most of my friends (non IG friends) were there with me because oakland art and soul was another regular sunday for them, doing something fun in our hometown. it was fun to introduce my friends to the live IG experience! the weather was perfect too, the heatwave has ended. the downfalls were of course a shorter set because it was a festival and my favorite boy having to bail at the last second due to illness.
we were (of course) front row, dead center, touching the stage. that's what happens when you arrive before the gates even open. ;)
here is IG's setlist, as played:
shame on you
least complicated
become you
fill it up again
gone again (!!!)
(a speaker about del martin's life from the lyon martin health services)
power of two (dedicated to del martin and phyllis lyon)
go
get out the map
three hits (!!!)
the wood song
money made you mean
last tears
reunion (!!!)
pendulum swinger
sugar tongue
fleet of hope
closer to fine (w/ matt nathanson)
(encore)
kid fears (w/ matt nathanson - he blew it away! the only better kid fears guest i have heard is trina meade from three5human. seriously, matt's vocals kicked ass on kid fears!)
galileo
other festival highlights:
raysterfiend's rick springfield solo during matt nathanson's set
all of the obama people out in full force (hello, it's oakland)
sprinting 1/2 a mile to the stage
matt nathanson's set (and his gaggle of teenage girls. LOL) and meeting matt after his set. as i said, now i am a fan.
walking around the festival and being so proud to live in oakland (and proving to the OPD by rattling off five reasons why, "i hella (heart) oakland" (as my tee shirt said). just being at a festival in my hometown with the indigo girls!
all in all a great day.

i was going to go to tonight's beastie boys show at the berkeley greek just to hang out with some friends, but instead i stayed in and watched big love on dvd. entertaining. very entertaining. anyway, in the midst of all this, i realize i did not post the setlists from the indigo girls shows i attended on the east coast last week. nearly a week late, but here they are.

and that wraps up indigo girls summer tour. i have a few more shows on the horizon, but none of them are officially during the "summer." that also means that my summer tour set on flickr is complete. i didn't do so bad this time either. i was able to get at least one photo at every show (including humphreys) with the exception of the two stone mountain shows. fair enough. i can understand the no cameras policy for that venue. i am so glad that i got some great shots - they're going to serve as great memories for years to come. this summer was amazing. i started on the west coast, went to atlanta, went to alaska (which was lifechanging in so many ways), and ended up on the east coast. i added two states to my "states i have seen the indigo girls" map: maine and alaska. i saw so many of my friends along the way, and had an all around great summer tour. although i will see IG before next summer, there's nothing quite like a summer tour. so i am already ready to start planning summer of 2008! ok, after i get caught up on my sleep. i am old now. i need more sleep.

woah.... six shows in eight days in two very opposite sides of the country. i am officially worn out. but my atlanta to home (for one day) to alaska deal was so worth it. i got to see the best show ever (the roxy) and got to experience alaska for the first time with two of my favorite people (and their crew!). in terms of alaska shows, anchorage #2 was hands down my favorite. tonight was really good, but it had sort of a weird vibe that i can't quite put my finger on. the girls seemed a bit tired and disconnected. and i kind of felt the same way. it's not that it wasn't a great show - no matter what, amy and emily always put on killer shows. it was just the crowd, the vibe, my complete lack of sleep, etc.
photos coming soon. not sure how any of them turned out as i had to be *fast* because of the retarded no camera policy (hello! ask the BAND what their policy is and follow THAT!)
tomorrow i'm going to "see shit" in fairbanks before heading home. i am so thankful that i got the opprutunity to come to alaska for the first time ever. and i am so thrilled that (as lame as this sounds) i got to center it around indigo girls shows. i just checked off a BIG state from my list, and i got to see some amazing sights up here.

a few comments: this show was a lot better than last night's (both were really good). as you can see, the setlist was varied and included a lot of surprises. my personal highlight was "cordova." amy and emily did this amazing two mandolin interlude. i filmed it, but google video is not being cooperative (i am NOT compromising the quality by youtubing it). amy told a hilarious story about being in the pub and people around her talking about whether or not they're going to the indigo girls show. the people she overheard were going to the bela fleck show instead! criminal. they asked her if she was going to the IG show and had *no* idea who she was. emily and i both spent some time hiking around today. oh, and i really really thought we'd have a "power of two" free show, but see the encore... :( during "kid fears," i missed trina meade from three5human *so* much. after the show i showed amy the lonely planet guide to alaska where it mentions "cut it out" under the listing for darwin's theory.
all in all a great night.
my photos are finished uploading and they are some of my best ever!

a few comments: this show was a lot better than last night's (both were really good). as you can see, the setlist was varied and included a lot of surprises. my personal highlight was "cordova." amy and emily did this amazing two mandolin interlude. i filmed it, but google video is not being cooperative (i am NOT compromising the quality by youtubing it). amy told a hilarious story about being in the pub and people around her talking about whether or not they're going to the indigo girls show. the people she overheard were going to the bela fleck show instead! criminal. they asked her if she was going to the IG show and had *no* idea who she was. emily and i both spent some time hiking around today. oh, and i really really thought we'd have a "power of two" free show, but see the encore... :( during "kid fears," i missed trina meade from three5human *so* much. after the show i showed amy the lonely planet guide to alaska where it mentions "cut it out" under the listing for darwin's theory.
all in all a great night.
my photos are finished uploading and they are some of my best ever!
anchorage #2 photos!
29 songs. three and a half hours. i can't even describe how rocked out this show was. and no, the dvd will NOT do it justice.

on saturday night, after the portland show, i kept telling myself that i should just go home. nothing, and i mean nothing, would top portland. the venue was amazing. the indigo girls were ON FIRE. the setlist was perhaps the best ever. and the crowd was in to it, but not *too* into it that you couldn't hear amy and emily. i knew that seattle, which is my last show for a few weeks (because NO, i decided NOT to attempt salt lake city), would be a let down after portland. and was i ever right...
first of all (and if any of you brandi carlile fans are reading this, this piece of advice is for y'all too) if you're going to a concert at the woodland park zoo, bring your cane, crutches, wheelchair, cast, etc. it won't matter if you get in line at THREE IN THE MORNING (as i did), you can just forget about getting right up front. why? they let all of the handicapped people in first. i have no problem with that on principle, but for every person with a cane, there are at least three people with a tarp, chairs, and a cooler. and they all go in with their handicapped friend. and they all took up the WHOLE FIRST THREE ROWS.
major edit: i have no problem with people with disabilities getting in early. none. none. none. if y'all recall, last year *i* was extremely ill and had to use a cane to walk. however, i do have problems with people clearly taking advantage of the system, as many did. i overheard several people discussing how they are not disabled but were pretending to be as disabled people get in first, so they didn't have to wait in line all day. i also think it's shitty for three or four people to take up enough room right up front, where space is at a premium, for ten people. thankfully the folks at the woodland park zoo knew this all happened and are meeting TODAY (19 june) to work out a fair and legal soultion so that anyone who needs extra time to get in can still have it, but fans who were waiting outside since the early hours of morning will not get screwed. the aladdin has it down (in fact, at the aladdin, i was standing right next to brandi carlile's grandmother, front and center, who was in a wheelchair. she had a blast at the show as did i). so does britt fest. so do several other venues i go to. there is a fair way to do this. end edit
i threw a stink, and i mean a stink. i finally reasoned with someone who was semi-nice and got
crazycatdoglady and myself a front row spot. but it was a fight and a struggle. and the girls who were out there at five am ended up about five rows back. the girls who arrived at seven were waaaaaaaaay back and off to the side. i am sorry, i am all for handicap rights, but there has GOT TO BE A BETTER WAY. britt fest does it fairly, there is an area up front (but not taking up the whole front) ropped off for wheelchair users and people with canes, crutches, and other disabilities. very fair.
anyway, once the indigo girls took the stage it was clear to me that courtney and i were not surrounded by fans. we were the only IG fans in the front row. some woman, who obviously had to be up front, asked courtney what their names were and what they sing. i was on the verge of a nervous breakdown at this point, so i let courtney politely answer their questions while i sat on the blanket (yes, sat) trying to get more reaction around me because, HELLO, the indigo girls were up there playing.
brandi carlile showed up, and i have to say, i wasn't too pleased about that. don't get me wrong, i love brandi, i do. i don't LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE brandi, but i really love her. BUT due to a fucked up curfew at the zoo, the show was only 87 minutes long. the same was true for pechanga at the start of the tour (which y'all will remember was an amazing setlist), but pechanga was NOTHING but surprises. since brandi was there, they *had* to play "kid fears," "hope alone," and "last tears." uggh. and then, although brandi is bigger in seattle than IG, they used an encore spot to play her song "cannonball." as i said, i love brandi, but i (and i heard similar mumblings from a LOT of other people) was there for the indigo girls. i don't drive 12 hours overnight for brandi carlile. i don't do whole tours for brandi. i almost felt it became the brandi carlile show with a special guest appearance by the indigo girls. uggh.

brandi was not the opening act, as you can see. it was thao with the get down stay down.
back to the crowd because i just couldn't deal. i am sure the fans at the back of the venue were awesome and were singing and dancing, but no one up front sang, danced, moved, or even cheered for amy and emily. in fact, many people around us (who, as i said, just had to be up front after getting there 30 seconds before doors.... yes, i am bitter) were carrying on personal conversations (loudly) while the girls were on stage. amy and emily sang every word of "power of two" and "fill it up again" (which are usually audience participation songs). the definate highlight was "faye tucker." it was pretty amazing. amy was angry. a-n-g-r-y. she was storming around stage, making faces, and making up lyrics. of course no one around us appreciated it. in fact, i over heard an in-depth conversation about goat vs. blue cheese. yes, during "faye tucker." "don't think twice it's alright" would have been great except brandi took which was historically amy's part in that song, which is (not a surprise) my favorite part of that song (third verse... i just love the way amy's voice usually sounds). and since i wasn't feeling my brandi love as strong last night, i was disappointed.
i was only able to take a few photos due to venue nazis. one mean volunteer decided that she hated courtney and i from early on, and watched us like hawks (hmmm... probably because we were the only ones SMILING and SINGING in the first row). fucker. i don't think any of my photos came out. amy wore the "i've been to graceland" shirt with the (as i call 'em) recycled tire pants. emily looked nice in her black tee shirt and jeans.
i left the show feeling completely let down. i was (and still am) torn over whether i should go to salt lake to try to redeem it all. in the end i decided aganist it: red butte gardens is a beautiful place, but that venue can also be an indigo disaster. i decided to hang on to the memories from portland and wait three weeks for reno. i am glad i made that decision because a) i am exhausted and b) i am having car issues. i'm not going to make it back to the bay area this morning as planned.
so that is it, kids. indigo girls west coast summer tour 2007. pechanga, san diego, palm desert, saratoga, san francisco, napa, jacksonville, portland, and seattle (with long beach and tucson a few weeks earlier). next up: reno. then atlanta. then the east coast. until reno, i am hanging on to portland because that was fucking awesome. and i am erasing seattle from my mind.

before i post the entire setlist, can i just say this:
i know i say this at about every fifth show, but this is it. best fucking show ever. best.
THEY PLAYED HAND ME DOWNS!!!! holyholyholyholyfuck, after SIX FREAKING years of requesting that song, they played it. i just about died. and it takes a LOT to shock me with nearly 200 indigo girls shows in my count. i think my jaw dropped to the stage for a good 30 seconds. i wondered if i was dreaming. seriously.
so here is the most fucking amazing setlist perhaps ever. the only two songs that would have made it perfection were "devotion" and "watershed," but a girl can't win 'em all.
